'Hear My Love Again' Review

Oh. Oh my. This might be one of the most beautiful vertical dramas I’ve watched. I cried. I felt their emotions, their pain, and their frustration with each other and the situations they were trapped in. 🥹

On their wedding day, Ariel loses her hearing. Years later, after tragedy restores it, the first thing she hears devastates her, leading her to hide her regained sense from her husband, Markus, a congressman running for governor.

There are so many dimensions to this story. It’s friends-to-lovers, but not really. It’s a contract marriage gone wrong, but does not fully fit that mold either.

Because this is more than just a love story. It is a love story embedded within a political thriller, and we feel that tension from the very beginning, when Ariel is kidnapped.

We are pulled between deeply personal emotional moments, the competitive and often ruthless political landscape, and the constant high stakes of danger and survival.

Being held captive becomes Ariel’s first real encounter with freedom since entering her marriage. The irony of Ariel finding freedom after her captivity is not lost on me. It is then that she finds the courage to free herself… and Markus, whom she believes she has trapped in a life he never wanted as he was originally meant to marry her sister Claire.

Markus, on the other hand, believes he has trapped Ariel in a life under constant public scrutiny. Raised to pursue a political career he never truly wanted, he carries the weight of knowing this is not the life he would have chosen for her.

Gabe Armentano and Lottie Guidi deliver heartbreakingly honest performances as Markus and Ariel, childhood best friends who both believe they have ruined the other’s life.

Ariel could not hear at first, and Markus refused to be heard. He keeps everything in, trying to protect her, but only ends up pushing her further away.

So when Ariel asks for a divorce, she finds herself confused by his resistance, his jealousy, his quiet acts of care, and his tenderness that seems to contradict everything else she had seen from him.

Despite its many moving parts, the story weaves these elements together with impressive clarity, resulting in one of the most thoughtfully crafted narratives the vertical format has to offer.

In an interview with the author, lead actress Guidi shared: “In the heart of it, [Hear My Love Again] is just a story of this girl learning to stand up for herself and learning how to find her path throughout this political landscape and throughout being in love with her husband since being a child and not knowing if he ever really loved her. […] Ariel’s story is a complex one to navigate.”

Guidi brings a quiet precision to Ariel. Playing a woman who chooses to continue pretending she is deaf to protect herself from what she believes is the truth about her husband, she balances vulnerability with restraint.

She initially compared the project to a vertical-format "Scandal." Others may see parallels to the K-drama "When the Phone Rings," but "Hear My Love Again" stands out in how it delivers emotional and narrative closure. Both comparisons highlight the strong atmosphere and compelling political world-building set by the series.

Markus could easily have come across as cruel, but Armentano plays him with remarkable restraint and nuance. The microexpressions, the subtle gestures, and the shifts in tone when he is caught off guard by Ariel’s defiance all communicate his love clearly to the audience, even if Ariel herself cannot fully see it. 😬

The series avoids excessive violence, instead drawing tension from the emotional push and pull between its leads.

And without giving too much away, the supporting characters played by Anthony Laurita and Jessica Ruth Bell are not at all what they seem and are driven in such a way that we don’t see them coming when their respective moments arrive.

"Hear My Love Again" is a beautifully written story that feels strangely overlooked given how well-crafted it is. If you have not watched it yet, take the time to catch it on DramaWave.
