Gabe Armentano has played CEOs, billionaires, politicians, and romantic leads. But when asked to define himself, the vertical drama actor began with something much simpler.

Audiences who watch vertical dramas may know Gabe Armentano as a CEO, politician, billionaire heir, or romantic lead. Over the past two years, the actor has appeared in dozens of productions, becoming one of the genre's most familiar faces.

But when asked to define himself, Armentano didn't point to a résumé, a favorite role, or a career milestone.

Instead, he offered a much simpler description during his recent exclusive with Vertical Drama Explorer:

"I am a small-town kid who got inspired by the opportunity to reach people through art, and I haven't managed to leave the city in 14 years."

It's an answer that captures the contrast at the center of his story.

While audiences know him through larger-than-life characters on their phone screens, Armentano still sees himself as the Connecticut kid who grew up surrounded by nature long before acting became his profession.

The Small-Town Kid Behind the Leading Man

Armentano grew up in Oxford, Connecticut, a town that remains an important part of how he views himself today.

Since then, his career has taken him far from home. He spent eight years in New York, has lived in Los Angeles for the past several years, and has traveled internationally through his work, including multiple trips to China.

Yet despite those experiences, he says he still feels connected to his roots.

"Verticals have definitely gotten me beyond the borders of the USA," he said.

"I've gotten to visit China. I've gotten to shoot in Vancouver." But in terms of just purely how I see myself, sometimes I just want to go in my little corner of nature or something that kind of brings me back to my roots."

While he appreciates the opportunities that come with city life, he admitted that part of him still misses the slower pace and natural surroundings of home.

That balance between ambition and simplicity continues to shape his life off-camera.

Why Acting Became His Calling

Unlike many performers who describe a lifelong certainty about becoming an actor, Armentano's interests were wide-ranging.

"There was a part of me that wanted to maybe be a leader in my church community," he said. "I got excited about engineering and teaching, architecture. I went through a phase where I thought maybe I'd want to be an airline pilot or a musician."

Ultimately, acting became the path he pursued professionally.

For Armentano, the appeal wasn't fame or recognition. Instead, he was drawn to the way acting allows performers to connect with other people and tell meaningful stories.

"Acting, in my opinion, is the ultimate form of empathy where you step into someone else's shoes regardless if you believe the same thing, agree with them, whatever," he said.

The idea has remained central to his philosophy as an actor:

"If they are experiencing truth with you, then you're doing your job."

Armentano also spoke about enjoying the opportunity to bring people together through performance. Looking back on school productions and collaborative creative projects, he remembered finding fulfillment in helping create experiences that audiences could share.

Those motivations continue to influence how he approaches his work today.

The Unexpected Path to Vertical Dramas

Given how closely Armentano is associated with vertical dramas now, his entry into the genre came from an unlikely source. It started with what he thought would be a hand-modeling and lifestyle shoot.

During the project, he met a casting director who repeatedly encouraged him to audition for vertical dramas. At first, he wasn't interested.

"Are you talking about those werewolf CEO things?" he recalled thinking. "I have no interest in doing that."

At the time, he was focused on more traditional acting opportunities and knew very little about the rapidly growing format.

Eventually, he agreed to audition and landed the role of James in "My Accidental Alpha's Desire."

His perspective changed once he experienced the work firsthand.

"I was like, 'Oh, I get it,'" he said. "Because this is my opportunity to pay the bills, network, practice my craft, and kind of just get exposure."

For Armentano, the format became more than a new acting opportunity. It was a chance to sustain himself through the profession while continuing to grow as an actor.

Today, Armentano estimates he has appeared in roughly 33 or 34 vertical dramas, including more than 20 lead roles.

"There was a moment somewhere around May or June of 2025 where I kind of exhaled, and I was like, 'Okay, I think I'm part of this community,'" he shared.

Life Beyond the Screen

While acting occupies much of his professional life, Armentano's interests extend far beyond the set.

Music has remained a constant creative outlet. He regularly writes songs, plays piano, and shares snippets of his music online.

He is also an avid reader and enjoys exploring new creative projects whenever his schedule allows.

One of those projects is a board game he has been developing in his spare time. A longtime fan of games like Catan and Risk, Armentano said he has been spending some of his free time brainstorming mechanics, rules, and player interactions for a game of his own.

"It's a big brain teaser puzzle, something that I'd eventually like to test out with friends," he said.

Fitness has become another area of focus in recent years, and he spoke about working intentionally to improve his health and overall well-being.

Armentano is also documenting parts of his life in a more old-fashioned way. He often carries a disposable camera with him, capturing candid moments from travels, productions, and everyday experiences.

Away from work, he is balancing a long-distance relationship with actress and model Ani, who is based in China. Together, they operate a social media page dedicated to sharing their experiences and encouraging other couples navigating long-distance relationships.

"That's been a fun source for us of just sharing our lives and offering encouragement to people who are also in long-distance relationships," he said.

Whether it's songwriting, photography, game design, or documenting moments with loved ones, Armentano's creative instincts rarely seem to switch off.

More Than an Actor

One project that stands out is "Rage Bait," a short film he co-wrote, co-produced, and acted in alongside friends.

Unlike many acting jobs, the project allowed him to participate in the creative process from the ground up.

"There was something so fulfilling about executing the production of 'Rage Bait,'" he said.

The experience reinforced a growing interest in developing projects of his own.

"I need to get a couple pitches put together so I can start talking with clients in the vertical space because I have ideas that I'd really love to make," he said.

Looking ahead, he hopes to continue acting while expanding into writing and producing.

"I don't think it would be good just purely showing up as an employee for everyone else's project," he said. "I need to experience what it's like to put a team together and produce one of my own ideas."

It's a goal that reflects the broader creative curiosity he has carried throughout his life.

While audiences may know him as a CEO, billionaire, politician, or romantic lead, Gabe Armentano increasingly seems focused on something larger: finding new ways to tell stories, whether that's in front of the camera or behind it.

For the small-town kid who once dreamed about everything from architecture to aviation, the next chapter may involve creating worlds of his own.
